Breaking News: Taiwan Struck by Powerful Earthquake

Major Earthquake Rocks Taiwan, Causing Casualties and Injuries

A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 has struck off Taiwan's eastern coast on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake occurred at 12:23 PM GMT and was followed by a series of aftershocks.

Initial Reports Indicate Severe Damage and Casualties

Preliminary reports indicate that the quake has caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure in eastern Taiwan. At least nine people have been confirmed dead, while over 900 others have been injured. Rescue workers are currently searching for survivors trapped in collapsed structures.

The earthquake has also triggered power outages and disrupted transportation services in the affected areas. Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau has issued a tsunami warning, but it has since been lifted.

The USGS has characterized the earthquake as the strongest to hit Taiwan in nearly 25 years. The previous major earthquake in Taiwan occurred in 1999, causing over 2,000 deaths.
