Increased Aggression in Cape Fur Seals Prompts Humane Euthanasia

WEB: Cape Town - Increased aggression in Cape fur seals has led to a decision to implement humane euthanasia for seals displaying unusually aggressive behavior.

In recent months, several seals have been observed attacking humans, dogs, and each other. While rabies is not new to Cape fur seals, this is the first time it has been endemic in the population.

Rabies in Cape Fur Seals Now Endemic

To date, there have been seven confirmed cases of rabies in Cape Fur Seals. The earliest current case dates back to 2022.

Cape fur seals with rabies have infected at least seven people in South Africa. Vaccinations are being administered in an effort to prevent further human infections.
