Cleveland Browns Running Back Jamal Lewis Announces Retirement

NFL veteran calls it a career after 10 seasons in the league

Lewis finishes his career with 10,607 rushing yards, 79 rushing touchdowns, 316 receptions, 2,144 receiving yards, and 11 receiving touchdowns.

Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, ending a 10-year career in which he rushed for over 10,000 yards and scored 79 touchdowns.

Lewis, who was selected fifth overall by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2000 NFL Draft, spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Ravens before signing with the Browns in 2007. He was a key member of the Ravens' Super Bowl XXXV championship team in 2000, and he led the NFL in rushing during the 2003 season.

In his final season with the Browns, Lewis rushed for 500 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games. He also caught 21 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown.

Lewis's retirement leaves a void in the Browns' backfield, but the team has several young running backs who are expected to compete for playing time in 2013. Montario Hardesty, Dion Lewis, and Chris Ogbonnaya are all expected to be in the mix for the starting job.
