What is Parvovirus B19?
Parvovirus B19 is a common virus that causes a mild illness called fifth disease. The virus is spread through respiratory droplets from people with symptomatic or asymptomatic infection.
Symptoms of Parvovirus B19
Symptoms of parvovirus B19 include:
- Fever
- Rash
- Joint pain
Most people recover from parvovirus B19 within a few weeks.
Complications of Parvovirus B19
In some cases, parvovirus B19 can cause serious complications, including:
- Aplastic crisis: a sudden drop in red blood cell production
- Hydrops fetalis: a condition that can lead to fetal death
- Arthritis
People with weakened immune systems are at increased risk for developing complications from parvovirus B19.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Parvovirus B19
Parvovirus B19 is diagnosed with a blood test. There is no specific treatment for parvovirus B19, but supportive care can help relieve symptoms.
Prevention of Parvovirus B19
There is no vaccine to prevent parvovirus B19. However, you can reduce your risk of infection by:
- Avoiding contact with people who are sick
- Washing your hands frequently
- Covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
If you are pregnant, it is important to avoid contact with people who are sick with parvovirus B19. If you do come into contact with someone who is sick, talk to your doctor about getting tested for parvovirus B19.
